Okay so Groundhog Day was yesterday, but it is just one of those random holidays that I enjoy so much. Like Shrove Tuesday which is next (would you believe) Tuesday. What a great day, seemingly out of nowhere a day dedicated to eating Pancakes, that’s right my cross-Atlantic friends Shove Tuesday is also popularly known as Pancake Day! To the Americans you might know it as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras (which is French for Fat Tuesday.) But I’m sorry I think the British got it right; don’t get fat on any ol’ thing …. Get fat on Pancakes! It is the way forward and you don’t have to dangly shiny things from balconies to see drunk woman’s breast.
February, you got to love it for it’s messed up Pagan-come-Christian-come-Commercial holidays. Groundhogs, pancakes, and winged babies in diapers, sure it started out as pagan rituals like the Feast of Lupercal that then became religious holidays like Candlemas, Shrove Tuesday, and an actually saint’s feast day, which now sells cards, flowers, little lemon shaped bottles of lemon juice (maple syrup can be hard to come by the Brits like their pancakes with lemon –crazy) and tickets to Punxsutawney. I love it, I say more woodchucks, flapjacks (in American sense of the word – unless if you prefer crapes), and love hearts all around. I still haven’t recovered from the vast amount of love hearts I had at my birthday, I think it gave me an ulcer, but it was worth it.
